What Nepal Sambat is, and how this calendar reckons it

An era begun in 879 CE

Nepal Sambat is the indigenous lunisolar era of Nepal, counted from 879 CE and carried above all by the Newar calendar of the Kathmandu Valley. The year opens on Kachhalā Thwa Pāru, the day of Mha Pūjā, when the household turns and worships its own selves — and closes twelve lunar months later.

A day here is a tithi, not a rotation

The NS date of any day is the tithi in effect at sunrise: one thirtieth of a lunation, measured off every 12° of elongation between Moon and Sun. Because a tithi runs shorter or longer than a solar day, a number sometimes repeats and sometimes vanishes — visible in the grid above, and correct rather than broken.

Set against Bikram Sambat

Bikram Sambat is solar — its months begin at sankranti, when the Sun enters a sidereal sign, and its days are plain sunrise-to-sunrise. Nepal Sambat is lunisolar. BS runs roughly 937 years ahead of NS, which is why the two figures on every cell above never march in step.

Method & credit

Sunrise is computed for 27.7172° N, 85.3240° E — Kaal Bhairab, Kathmandu. Solar and lunar longitudes come from a low-precision formulation referred to a Lahiri-style ayanāṃśa; new moons are found by Newton refinement on the elongation. The calendrical rules follow Saunak Ranjitkar's Nepal Sambat Algorithm: A scientific dissection. Bikram Sambat months are derived from the official month-length table. Everything runs from a computed date — no server tracks your dates.

Common questions

What is today's Nepal Sambat date?

Gunlā Gā Dashami, NS 1146 — the tithi in effect at sunrise in Kathmandu today, Sep 6, 2026.

When is Nepal Sambat new year?

Kachhalā Thwa Pāru — Mha Pūjā, the day after Laxmi Pūjā, in late October or November. NS 1147 begins Nov 10, 2026.

When is Yomari Punhi?

Thinlā Thwa Punhi — the next falls Dec 24, 2026. Steamed yomari mark the end of the rice harvest.

Why do some day numbers repeat?

What do Thwa and Gā mean?

Thwa is the bright fortnight — the waxing Moon, Pāru to Punhi. Gā is the dark fortnight, waning to Āmai, the new moon that closes the month.

Can I subscribe to the parbā dates?
